Bull Mother Farm

1.0.Introduction :
Bull Mother Farm, J.A.U., Pratappara, Amreli is an organized farm of Junagadh Agricultural University. It has been entrusted the responsibility of maintaining valuable germ-plasm of purebred herds of Gir cows and Jaffrabadi buffaloes for production of elite breeding bulls to bring about genetic improvement in North- Saurashtra Agro-climatic zone.

2.0. Mandate:
The farm has the mandate of conservation and improvement of Gir cattle and Jaffrabadi buffaloes by production of elite breeding males through implementation of the plan Scheme.
3.1. Name of the Scheme:
  • Establishment of Bull Mother Farm of Gir cattle and Jaffarabadi buffaloes at Amreli (Budget Head: 12303-15).
3.2. Objective: 
To establish Bull Mother Farm of Gir cattle and Jaffrabadi buffaloes.

5.0. Achievements made in the Scheme / Present Status of the farm station :
5.1.   A total of 20 (9 Gir, 11 Jaffarabadi) calves were born at the farm during the year-2020.
5.2.   Number of bovine animals in station-herd increased from 56 (26 Gir cattle, 30 Jaffarabadi buffalo animals) to 76 (34 Gir cattle and 42 Jaffarabadi buffalo animals) during the year-2020.So far 12 Gir and 4 Jaffarabadi male animals have been supplied to Gram panchayats / Gaushala for improvement of field bovines.
5.3.  Numberof milch unit in Gir and Jaffarabadi herd averaged 5.75 (53.42%) and 8.72 (62.67%), respectively, during the year-2020. The wet average for corresponding herd were 5.26±0.24 and 7.66±0.43 lit.
5.4.   From 4.65 ha. of land under cultivation, total annual fodder production at the farm amounted to 231.63 tonnes during current year-2020. A variety of fodder crops were used for feeding the herd bovines. The station-herd had, on an average, 41.86 number of A.U./day and daily dry matter intake/A.U. was 13.99 kg while the same on % body weight averaged 2.77 and additionally grazing was available during monsoon and early winter months.
5.5.   During the year 2020-21, the farm receipt realized amounted to Rs. 12,79,747/-, which was 26.74 % of the total recurring grant allocated for the year.

6.0 Technical programmes
Two recommendations for farmers and one recommendation for Scientific community were approved in 17th Joint Agresco (on 19-3-2021) while one technical program entiteled “Study of growth and lactation performance traits of Gir cattle and Jaffarabadi buffalo at B.M.F., JAU, Amreli” isbeing executed at this center.
7.0. Other activities being carried out by the center :
7.1.  Teaching Activity:   LPM courses at College of Agri., JAU, Mota Bhandariya, Amreli  and Polytechnic in Agri., JAU, Dhari.
8.0. Future Programme :
8.1.  To increase the number of breeding stock by rearing farm born calves as replacement stock.
8.2.  To develop uncultivated land near animal sheds into cultivable land and strengthen fodder production.
