Dry Farming Research Station, Jam Khambhalia

Introduction:

The problems of crop production in the rainfall areas of the arid and semi-arid regions revealed that an acute ecological imbalance of the components of productivity is responsible for limiting the consistency of remunerative crop production in these regions. Harsh and unfavorable climatic condition results in unstable, low and unremunerated yield. In order to meet the challenges and the vagaries of monsoon and to evolve suitable technology to minimize such risk and stabilize production potential in the dry farming areas of Gujarat state.

Year of Starting: 1958

Mandate:

  • To screen and evaluate the varieties of high yielding potential, better grain quality and tolerance to various biotic and abiotic stress.
  • To develop location specific crop production technologies.
  • To act as testing center for multilocation trials of various crops.
  • To act as testing center for dry farming technology trials.
  • Quality seed production programme of high yielding varieties.

Objectives:

(A) Dry Farming Research Scheme:

  • To develop the package of practices of rainfed crops.
  • To identify suitable crop and their varieties for their yield potential in rainfed area of the region.
  • To produce breeder and improved seeds of major crops of this region.

(B) National Agricultural Research Project:

  • To strengthen the dry farming research scheme.

Research Activities:

Crop improvement:

  • Testing of newly developed genotypes under different categories of breeding trials like SSVT, LSVT, SSHT, LSHT.
  • Quality seed production of different varieties (Breeder, Truthful, Certified) on large scale to cater the need of various seed industries, agencies and farmers.

Resource Management:

  • To evaluate integrated nutrient management practices in various dry farming crops to sustain soil health under rainfed condition.
  • Integrated weed management in dry farming/rainfed condition.
  • Various soil moisture conservation practices and experiments in relation to dry farming.

Transfer of Technologies:

  • Training to krishi sakhi/CRP under National Mission on Natural Farming programme.
  • Visiting model farm, Bio input resource centers in relation to natural farming concept.
  • Diagnosis and suggestions to farmers for prevailing modern agricultural problems.
  • Farm mechanization related concepts.
  • Performed duties as Nodal officer in drone project.
  • Delivered speech in farmer related programme conducted by GNFC, GSFC, and Various NGOs.
  • Member in various state agriculture department project.
  • Motivate students of 10th/12th prior to admission in Diploma/Degree course in faculty of Agriculture/ Horticulture/ Agril. Engineering/ Veterinary science/ Fisheries science etc.
  • Performed duties in Krishi mela/ Krishi Sibir etc conducted by university/state department.

Research Recommendation.

The farmers of North Surashtra Agro-climatic zone growing groundnut during kharif season are recommended to keep their crop weed free through hand weeding and interculturing at 15, 30, 45 and 60 DAS or apply Quizalofop-ethyl 40g/ha at 20 DAS fb IC & HW at 40 DAS for effective weed management as well as to obtain higher yield and net return. (2018-19).

ઉત્તર સૌરાષ્ટ્ર ખેત આબોહવાકીય વિસ્તારમાં ખરીફ ઋતુમાં મગફળી ઉગાડતા ખેડુતોને ભલામણ કરવામાં આવે છે કે તંદુરસ્ત પાક, વધુ ઉત્પાદન અને વધુ નફો મેળવવા માટે નિંદણમુક્ત પાક રાખવો ખુબ જરૂરી છે, આ માટે ૧૫, ૩૦, ૪૫ અને ૬૦ દિવસે હાથથી નિંદામણ અને આંતરખેડ (કરબડી ફેરવવી) કરવી જોઈએ અથવા જો મજૂરોની અછત હોય તો વાવણી પછી ૨૦ દિવસે ક્વિઝાલોફોપ-ઈથિલ ૪૦ ગ્રામ / હેકટર (સક્રિય તત્વ) મુજબ છંટકાવ કરવો અને ત્યારબાદ ૪૦ દિવસે એક વખત આંતરખેડ અને હાથથી નિંદામણ કરવું.
