The Genesis / History :
The Department Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, Junagadh started functioning since the inception of College of Agriculture in 1960. It was vested with the primary responsibility of looking after the teaching of under graduate and post graduate students. The Professor of the department was the Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) at the State level and he also looked after the research aspects of the discipline for the entire State. He also established linkages with farmers so as to familiarize them with the latest scientific development in agriculture and also to get a feed back in order to enable scientists to plan their future research programme. The post graduate programmes for master and doctorate degrees in the discipline were started in the year 1967.

Extension Activities:
Scientists from the department also give their views /suggestions /lectures in farmers meeting/gathering organized by JAU, State Department and NGOs at university campus and off campus. Samples of infected crops received personally from farmers as well as from other sources are immediately diagnosed for disease problem and proper measures are advised.  Every year nearly 1000 samples of different crops are received for diagnosis. Scientists also visit the field where disease outbreak taking place during the growing season for immediate solutions whenever necessary.
To strengthen and update the knowledge, faculty members of the department have attended national and international level training programmes as well as conferences/seminars. Scientists also communicate their views and findings through popular articles, radio and T.V. programmes.
During last five years the department faculties have participated in five Krushimohotsav/ krushi kalyan karyashala and 132 Gram Sabha & 63 village level extension programmes. Department has also participated in Krushimelas organized by State Department as well as NGOs to guide the farmers on integrated plant disease management.
For the management of soil borne diseases especially stem and pod rot of groundnut, department supplying bio-agent Trichoderma harzianum culture under the brand name of SAWAJ-TRICHODERMA to farmers at cheaper cost.
Department is also engaged in production and sale of liquid Bio-fertilizer SAWAJ-AZOTOBACTER, SAWAJ-RHIZOBIUM AND SAWAJ-PSM  which plays a vital role by enriching the soil fertility through  asymbiotic, symbiotic nitrogen fixation and mobilize immobile phosphorous, respectively.
Department is also supplying culture of bio-control agent Trichoderma harzianum and bio fertilizers viz; Rhizobium (Crop specific), Azotobacter and phosphate solubilizing micro-organisms to various department and P.G. students for their research experiments.
