Profile / History:

The country is indebted to our beloved leader late Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who has shaped our public life and has contributed much more specifically for uplifting the farming community. To commemorate his memory during his birth centenary in 1975, it was thought fit to establish Sardar Smruti Kendra at Junagadh, Junagadh Agricultural University, which will serve as a radiating centre to disseminate his spirit.

Government of Gujarat formed centenary celebration committee with people's contribution from Saurashtra and have established an institute named as “Sardar Smruti Kendra” by constructing building with a photographic gallery and a museum presenting latest technology and recommendation for farmers. The building of the Sardar Smruti Kendra at Junagadh Agricultural University was ceremoniously inaugurated on 11 February 1978 by the hands of Ku. Maniben Patel, daughter of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The museum has also a section depicting memorable portraits of “ARZI HAKOOMAT” formed for liberation of Junagadh through people struggle in 1947.

Mandates:

  • To empower the rural communities, particularly the under privileged farmers and farm women to have control over their own livelihood and manage their occupation to create better economic condition.

Objectives of the Centre:

  1. To maintain the photographic gallery of Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s biographic portrait and “ARZI HAKOOMAT” of Junagadh.
  2. To maintain an agricultural exhibition based on latest recommendations.
  3. To advice the farmers in latest technologies during their personal visit at centre or by telephonic manner.
  4. Improvement of Agro-Economic status of rural people.
  5. Planning and organization of short duration and need based training programme in agriculture, animal husbandry, value addition, home science and storage of food grain, etc. for farmers and farm women.
  6. Publication and distribution of farm literature in popular language as per need and requirement of farming community.
  7. Organize the visit of farmers in various research stations/farms, departments and different museums of JAU campus.

With these objectives in view, “Sardar Smruti Kendra” carries out its mission through the information wing, Training Wing and Exhibition Wing.

Co-curricular Activities:

  1. To organize training programmes for farmers and farm women on agriculture and allied fields.
  2. To collect the up-to-date latest information on agriculture and allied fields.
  3. To prepare agricultural research based information in form of leaflets, folders, booklets etc.
  4. To suggest the solutions to the problem of the farmers in concurrence with related scientists either in person or through correspondence.
  5. To participate in agricultural fair organized by university time to time for exposure of new agricultural technologies.
  6. To display advance agricultural technologies in form of charts, photographs, models and specimens etc.

1. Agricultural Exhibition:

Agricultural museum was established with a view to exhibit latest technologies related to agriculture and allied aspects. The information received from the museum, it will help them to improve their farming. The charts, graphs, models and live samples were used to exhibit agricultural technologies in the museum for better understanding about agricultural technology by all farmers.

2. Sardar Patel Photo Gallery:

The role played by Late Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel during the freedom struggle of our country was very unique and unparalleled. Also, he always thinking for farmers and he had done a unique and great work for farming community. To keep this soulful remembrance life of Sardar Patel, the Sardar Patel photo gallery was established at Sardar Smruti Kendra.

3. Agricultural Information Centre:

Large numbers of farmers are visiting Sardar Smruti Kendra. At the time of their visit, they can get information about agriculture and allied subject through exhibited charts, graphs, model, photographs and live sample related to agricultural aspects. Not only this, they can also get farm literature in form of leaflets, folders, booklets and books from this centre. This centre is also provides the telephonic information and guidance regarding agriculture.

(1) Agricultural Literatures Distribution (free of cost):

Total 1200 nos. of agricultural literatures distributed free of cost to farmers.

(2) Agricultural Literatures Selling:

Total 3215 nos. different agricultural literatures selling.

(3) Telephonic information:

Total 1127 farmers, farm women and students were individuals received agriculture allied sectors’ information through telephonic consultation.

(4) Visitors:

 Total 4413 visitors including farmers, farm women, students, extension personals and other visitors were guided properly with the different activities of our centre. We arrange visit of different research stations, museums of different departments and Krushi Darshnalaya to make them familiar with new technologies and new varieties developed by Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh.
