Our country is an agriculture-based nation. Agriculture is the backbone of our country’s development. Without the development of the agricultural sector, national development is not possible.
Progress in agriculture takes place only when farmers receive accurate and appropriate agricultural knowledge. The state of Gujarat has earned a reputation as a progressive state in the field of agriculture in the country. Along with modern farming practices, nearly 80 percent of farmers in the state obtain information from agro-input dealers and adopt the methods suggested by them. The agro-input network has also expanded extensively. To help farmers keep pace with modern agriculture, the network of agro-input dealers plays a very important role.
In Gujarat, an estimated 18,000 input dealers are involved in the distribution system of pesticides, fertilizers, and seeds. Under this framework, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh, as well as various research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras of the university, have initiated a 12-day (one day per week) Certificate Course on Pesticide Management. Through this course, input dealers are trained by agricultural universities on the proper use of pesticides and their side effects, agro-input regulations, crop protection, information on various agricultural schemes, pesticide usage, adverse effects of pesticides, beneficial insects, and related topics by subject-matter experts.
Through this course, Junagadh Agricultural University has successfully conducted a total of 14 training programs, under which 5,580 trainees have successfully completed the training.
