ABOUT THE INSTITUTE:
       Gujarat is one of the highly progressive and development conscious states in the country. The agricultural and the industrial development of the state are taking place at a fast pace not only due to the keen interest of the State Government but also due to the highly prospective, progressive and enterprising nature of the people of the state.
     With growing concern for lifestyle, health and nutrition, the importance and demand of home science courses are also increasing. Home Science Courses with their scientific approach and practical applicability can contribute a lot not only in fulfilling the personal ambitions of the students but also in betterment of family and community living in rural and urban areas. Moreover, when we are encouraging female education, home science education to the girls will have an added advantage, as it will not only impart the higher education to the girls but also help in the overall socio-economic development to the women folk at rural and urban level.
     Sensing the importance of home science education, the Government of Gujarat had sanctioned a Polytechnic in Home Science to Junagadh Agricultural University during the year-2008-09 with the intake capacity of 35 students. The primary objective of this three year (six semester) diploma course is to create and nourish a stimulating learning environment that ensures globally relevant education based on Eternal human values in the field of home science, specially to food & nutrition, health & hygiene of human being and also to provide trained man power to the educational institutes, various departments of Government, NGOs and concerned industries.
     Accordingly, a Polytechnic in Home Science has started its academic activities form the academic year 2009-10 at Amreli. The medium of teaching of this course is English and 10th  standard passed students  are eligible for admission.

ASSETS OF INSTITUTION:
     For providing better study environment well developed college building with gardening are available at this polytechnic. Well aerated class rooms, Seminar hall, Auditorium, Cookery lab, Management Lab, Extension Lab, Embroidery and Knitting Lab, Library etc. facilities are available in the polytechnic. The facilities are also available different playing materials, like table-tennis, Cricket, Volley ball, Carom, Chess etc. for physical development of students.
     For the girls students best residency facilities are available in girls' hostel under this polytechnic. Three students stay in single room for better study and well living room with furniture. In this hostel well facilitate prayer and yoga hall, visitor's room, Guest room, Office and well developed Dining hall and kitchen facilities are available. For better quality foods, self-maintained mesh runs by students. From this mess, better food available within minimum and affordable cost; for better health of students R.O. Plant fitted in college and hostel buildings. To check the outside activities for girls’ safety purpose CCTV cameras are fitted in the hostel premises.

FUTURE PROSPECTS IN HOME SCIENCE:

     These students can opt for careers in Foods & Nutrition, Human Development & Family Studies, Resource management & Consumer science and Apparel & Textiles. Direct admission in 2nd year in Degree Programme is plus point. Home science students can become dieticians in hospitals, diet consultants / counselors in lifestyle clinics, freelance dieticians food demonstrators, nutrition experts, consultants for child development programmes, programme officers for child welfare schemes and social development programmes in NGO, production managers in apparel industries. Besides that, a diploma in Home Science also opens up vistas for self-employment in the field like ready to eat food unit, tailoring and textile unit, Beauty Parlour etc. These diploma holders can also opt for degree course under diploma to degree programme. Other than these, students can select career like Teacher, Social Reformers, an Entrepreneur, Designer, Voluntary Welfare Services, Bakery & Confectionary Professional, Food Consultant, Dietician.

     Fast growth in the health and nutrition, food processing sector, hospitality industry, fashion designing, child care and communication media due to changes in life style as a result of globalization has opened up the gate of opportunities for the skilled person in the various areas of home science.
